CY vs. CFS – Understanding the Differences for Efficient Import-Export
CY vs. CFS: Key Differences You Need to Know
In the world of ocean freight, especially container shipping, you've likely encountered the terms CY (Container Yard) and CFS (Container Freight Station). While both are crucial locations in the logistics process, they play distinctly different roles. Grasping this distinction will help you plan your import-export operations more effectively, minimize errors, and save significant time. As a leading logistics provider, we'll dive into the critical differences between CY and CFS.
What is a Container Yard (CY)?
CY stands for Container Yard. Its primary role is a designated area for receiving and delivering empty containers and full container load (FCL) shipments.
A CY is a large, open yard primarily focused on managing entire containers, specifically for FCL (Full Container Load) shipments, where a single shipper's goods fill the entire container.
The shipper/consignee is responsible for delivering and collecting the container at the CY
What is a Container Freight Station (CFS)?
CFS stands for Container Freight Station. A CFS plays a vital role in handling less than container load (LCL) shipments, or consolidated cargo.
A CFS is a warehouse or station primarily focused on managing individual pieces or packages of cargo, specifically for LCL (Less than Container Load) shipments, which require consolidation or de-consolidation from multiple shippers/consignees.
Used when cargo doesn’t fill a full container; carrier or forwarder manages consolidation.
Service Variants: CY/CFS, CFS/CY, CFS/CFS
- CY/CFS: Full container delivered to CY origin and unpacked at destination CFS.
- CFS/CY: Shipper consolidates at origin CFS and container picked up at destination CY.
- CFS/CFS and CY/CY used according to logistics requirements on both ends.
